Who’s with me? Theater geeks unite!
A friend at work invited us to come and see a production of RENT put on by a local theater. I try and support the local theater and we had a good excuse – our friend was in the band. So why not. We heard rumors that the local Stockton paper wrote it up as “Local theater performs controversial musical.” Really? Is this the 80’s? Where do I live?
I’m super picky and kind of judge-y. I had mentally prepared myself for this to be a completely mediocre performance. Community theater. And at only $15…..I wouldn’t be too disappointed. I saw RENT in SF a year or 2 ago – original Mark and Roger. You can’t beat it. Kind of epic. So my expectations for this performance went completely out the window.
I was really surprised. It was good! Mark, Roger, Maureen and Joanne were awesome. Mimi was outstanding! Like really really good – her name is Katherine Dela Cruz – wish I could sing like that….sigh. There were a few cringe-worthy moments, some lost voices and a little bit of off-tune singing. But overall, I was thoroughly impressed. And the band was flawless….at least I didn’t hear any mistakes.
If you’re in the Tracy area this weekend, catch one of their last 2 shows tonight and tomorrow afternoon. We had dinner at the Great Plate across the street and it was quite tasty. They even upgraded our fries to potato wedges at no charge, VIP what?!
The Grand Theatre was recently renovated. I love the retro feel!
It went pretty late and I didn’t get home until midnight. Waaayy past my bedtime!
