years day is a major food holiday for Japanese folks.  And in case you didn’t know, I’m Japanese.

Growing up, this meant that New Years Eve was typically spent making food (which I was somehow able to sneak out of as I got a bit older).  Now that New Years Eve isn’t nearly the party scene it use to be, I have AMPLE time to make all sorts of food (but don’t get me wrong, homemade pizza and Apples to Apples is a perfectly amazing way to spend an evening).

The hard part about making the food here in CA, is that I’m the only one making the food.  But I decided that this year I’d make it for everyone and next year, I’d start asking people to help.  We’ll see if that works.  Either way, I got to eat all my favorites!

A fun, new addition to the typical spread was make your own sushi rolls!  This is a pretty easy and fun activity.  All you need is:

1.  Nori sheets (seaweed sheets)
2.  Your favorite sushi fillings (avocado, cucumber, radish sprouts, fish, etc)
3.  Sushi rice (calrose rice + sushi vinegar)
4.  A sushi mat – at Ranch 99

All of the fixings were purchased at Ranch 99 – the local Asian market.  I haven’t checked, but I imagine a place like Whole Foods would have a majority of the sushi filling and Safeway would probably have the rest.

Our friends were very creative and made some delicious rolls!  One of my faves was this beauty.  Salmon and eggs on top was a nice touch, Simon!

We decided that sushi making nights will be added into the dinner party rotation with each couple in charge of bringing a certain ingredient!
