We’re lucky enough to have friends with a cabin! And they like us enough to invite us out! Double bonus!
The cabin is located in Dorrington, CA and it’s about 2 ish hours outside of Livermore. But what is there to do in Dorrington? Let me tell you!
We spent Saturday afternoon hiking around Lake Alpine, just past Bear Valley. It’s not a very busy lake which makes it easy to find a spot on the beach. In addition, there are a few granite “islands” that you can easily reach either by a quick swim or by canoe.
Mochi enjoyed jumping around the granite rocks!

even walked into the lake up to his chest! But he got a little nervous when he couldn’t touch.
That evening, we headed to Murphy’s for a fireworks spectacular at the Ironstone winery.
The plus side to attending a fireworks show out in the boonies is showing up 2 hours before the main attraction and getting front row seats.
There really wasn’t a negative.
The fireworks were grand, albeit oddly timed. And I only had to close my eyes for a few parts when these strange seizure inducing fireworks went off one right after the other. But 30+ minutes of fireworks is a steal for just !
Sunday morning we woke up and headed straight for the Calaveras Big Trees State Park. It costs $8 per car to enter the park, and I’d say it’s totally worth it.
Big Trees is home to just that. Big. Trees.
How big? Well, the “Big Stump” is said to be about 1250 years old.
The park is home to groves of giant sequoia trees and we saw lots! Did you know the bark of a sequoia can be 2.5 ft thick?! Crazy! And their root system is very shallow but can go on for miles? That’s all the tree trivia I will be dispensing today 🙂
We hiked the south loop and it was about a 3 hour hike that covered around 5 miles. There was a lovely little stream and all sort of crazy (big) trees.
With so many big trees, it was only a matter of time before some yoga trees started to come out!
We capped off our hike with some ice cream! These lovely little ladies were serving ice cream cones for $1. Have you ever had something so amazing for $1? We all decided they could have easily charged more and we would have paid.
Did I mention there were sprinkles? How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?

I had an awesome weekend with good buds. Magic cookie crack sauce is rapidly approaching gone btw.
