No trip to Japan would be complete without a visit to Karaoke – or so we’ve been told. My mom’s cousin, Tatsuyuki, met us at our hotel and we ventured to a Karaoke spot – an 8 story high building with small rooms along small hallways, accessed by an even smaller elevator.
When we entered the building, Tatsuyuki took care of business – reserving a room and ordering drinks. Then we headed to our tiny karaoke room – that was really hot. Like Nick said, “it made an already uncomfortable situation, even more uncomfortable.” Someone was NOT looking forward to singing 🙂
Tatsuyuki broke the ice with a rousing rendition of “I left my heart in San Francisco.” Since he had originally thought we were from LA, I think this was a complete coincidence.
Then it was our turn. And we kinda froze. Since none of us were seasoned karaoke-ists, we had no real go-to song. I mean, when I was around 5 or 6, I think my go to song was Locomotion and Kokomo. I guess I had a thing for o’s? But we came up empty. Eventually we settled on Don’t Stop Believing, Buddy Holly (Weezer), and Piano Man. At which point I realized I knew very few of the lyrics to Piano Man.
We interspersed our picks with music videos of Tatsuyuki’s son – Naoto – who dances for a couple Japanese boy bands. Which was fun. (he’s on the top row, 2nd from the right)
